Signs That It Is Time To Replace Your Faucet

Other than the design, most people don't give their faucet a second look -- that is, until a problem surfaces. A poorly performing faucet can cause major problems, whether it's simple inconvenience when using it to major damage to your home from leaking water. The following are the signs that it is time to consider a faucet replacement for your sink.

Leaking Handles

Leaks that occur around the base of the handles can be the result of one of two things. The first issue is that a rubber gasket has given out. Fortunately, this is an easy fix since you only need to replace the gasket. Sometimes, particularly with older faucets or inexpensive "contractor grade" fixtures, the problem is that the steel fitting at the base of the handle has failed. In this case, it is generally more cost effective to replace the faucet entirely with a more modern or better constructed model. Don't ignore leaking handles. Not only are they wasting water, but the moisture can also make its way under the sink where it can cause damage.

Constant Drips

You may just consider a drip annoying, but it can be much worse than that. A dripping faucet is very expensive in the long run, as it can greatly increase the amount of water your home uses. Often, all you need to do is replace the o-ring in the faucet and the problem will be fixed. In some cases, particularly with older faucets or if there are multiple problems, a full faucet replacement is a better choice.

Rust or Corrosion

Rust or corrosion should never be ignored. it's not just unattractive, it's also damaging. Inferior metals tend to degrade over time when constantly exposed to moisture. If the faucet is showing issues on the outside, you can imagine what is occurring inside. Small pits from this degradation can result in holes that you may not even notice, but they will leak water where you definitely don't want it. Plus, if you drink the water from that faucet, you likely don't want bits of metal getting into the water.

Seating Issues

Your faucet shouldn't shake, wobble, or shift when you turn it on or off. If it does, you have an issue with how it is seated. This constant shifting can crack water lines and lead to leaks. In some cases, you just need to tighten a bolt or replace a seating gasket around the base of the faucet. In other cases, though, the issue is either damage to the faucet or a faucet that is not properly sized/designed for the sink. Replacement is the best option if this is the case.
