What To Do When Your Toilet Handle Is Loose
It can be helpful to know how to fix little issues with your toilet. Your toilet handle should be tight. When you push on your toilet handle, you shouldn't feel slack. When your toilet handle gets loose, it can actually impact the overall performance of your toilet. Luckily, this is an easy problem to fix. You can generally just tighten up the toilet handle.
Take Off the Cover
The first thing you should do is close the toilet seat cover so you don't drop anything into the toilet. Then, you need to take off the cover on the tank of the toilet. The cover for the tank can be heavy, so make sure you grip it with two hands and have a flat surface to set it on. Don't place the toilet tank cover on top of the toilet seat; this is not the most stable surface as most toilet seat covers have a slight curve. Place the cover on the ground or on a flat counter.
Turn Off the Water
Next, you need to turn off the water. There should be a water shut-off valve right next to the toilet. Turn the valve to the off position.
Then, you want to get rid of all the water inside the toilet. You can do this by simple flushing the toilet. This will empty the water out of the tank and will make it easier for you to fix the handle.
Once you turn off the water, flush the toilet to transfer the water in the tank into the bowl.
Find the Metal Nut for the Handle
Now you need to find the metal nut for the handle. It should be located inside of the tank, on the opposite side of where the handle is located, high up on the tank. It is basically directly on the other side of the handle inside the tank.
Adjust the Nut
Once you find the nut, you need to tighten it up. Use a wrench to tighten up the nut. You don't want to make it too tight. Just tighten it up so that it is no longer lose.
Test the Lever
After you tighten up the nut, test the lever. Push it down and make sure you get the right amount of resistance. If you don't get the right amount of resistance, then tighten the nut further until the handle is no longer lose.
Turn the Water Back On
Once the handle is tighten to your satisfaction, turn the water back on and flush the toilet. This will allow the toilet to fill back up with water.
